How to Study Your Bible
Reading the Bible is about more than simply getting through a passage or checking off a box for the day. God invites us to truly know Him through His Word, and one of the best ways we can grow in our understanding of Scripture is by slowing down and studying it with intention. During this workshop, we are learning how to study the Bible through three simple but important steps: context, interpretation, and application.
Context helps us understand what is happening in the background of a passage. It allows us to see who is speaking, who they are speaking to, and what is happening around the verses we are reading. When we take time to understand the context of Scripture, we begin to see the passage more clearly and avoid misunderstanding God’s message.
Interpretation helps us discover what the passage means. As we study, we can ask questions about what the author is teaching and what God may be revealing through the text. Tools like commentaries, study Bibles, and resources such as Blue Letter Bible or STEP Bible can help deepen our understanding and guide us as we learn.
Application is where God’s Word begins to shape our daily lives. Scripture was never meant to stay only in our minds. God wants His truth to transform our hearts, our choices, and the way we live. When we apply His Word, we begin to grow spiritually and reflect Him more in our everyday lives.
In John 15:1–11, Jesus describes Himself as the vine and us as the branches. He reminds us that apart from Him we can do nothing. Just as branches remain healthy by staying connected to the vine, we grow spiritually by remaining connected to Jesus through His Word. The more we study Scripture, the deeper our relationship with Him becomes.
This Week’s Challenge:
Read John 15:1–11 each day this week. Work through the workshop handout and spend time using the resources linked through the QR codes. As you study, practice looking at the context, interpretation, and application of the passage. Ask God to help His Word become more alive and meaningful in your daily life.
Prayer:
“God, help me to study Your Word. Provide me with the time, resources, and desire to know it better than I know it now. Teach me more and more how to love You and love the Scriptures. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.”
